Re-reading books

After seeing “Twilight” the movie, I decided I needed to re-read all four books to see what I loved about them.

There are very few books I have read more than once.

I revisit “The Great Gatsby” once every couple of years just because I love being swept away into the Roaring ’20s. There was a period of time where I read “The Exorcist” at least once a summer. Don’t ask me why, but I just thought it was good break-from-school fare.

Other than that,  I can’t really recall any books I’ve read more than once. Sure, there are plenty I mean to read again, but new ones always displace the old.

Maybe I’m just too afraid that reading something again will break the magic of the first time. I’m not sure what it is, but I want to know what you guys think.

Do you re-read books? Do you not because the second time around can never compare to that first time?

What’s your stance?

  1. All my life I felt I read too slowly to warrant giving books a second glance. There are too many books to read and too little time. When I read Harry Potter though, I couldn’t get enough. I’ve read them all 4 times, or I will have once I get around to reading Deathly Hallows one more time. The only other books I’ve read more than once are the Twilight books. I’ve read them all 3 times. In both cases I’ve found that there are subtle things that you pick up on the second or third read that make you go, “Huh, it was all there from the beginning.” That or your frame of mind is different and you relate to scenes in new ways or to characters that you hadn’t previously related to, etc.
